What We Are - Book Reviews

What We Are, is an acclaimed new novel by Peter Nathaniel Malae, a San Jose native and former SJSU student. This is the story of a young half-Samoan man (based on Malae himself) struggling to find his identity in Silicon Valley. The book won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award from the SF Intersection for the Arts and received a favorable review in the New York Times.

I really liked the familiar San Jose references, and the writing in the beginning was very exciting, but after a while it felt like just one big angry vent. Also too many F-bombs for a campus reading project. I do not recommend for the short list but I will probably return to this author for my personal reading possibilities.

F-bombs aside, this is an exciting and engaging take on the San Jose hoi polloi, as related by a half-Samoan, bookish felon. One of my favorite novels of 2009/2010. Sure to interest the students, but maybe not the administration.
