The Help - Book Reviews

The Help is on the list of possible book selections for 2011 because of a strong recommendation by a faculty member who has been teaching frosh for many years and its placement on some best seller lists. Some additional information:

Please post a comment to leave your review of this book and whether you think it would be a good selection for the SJSU Campus Reading program and why. Thanks.

I really enjoyed this book however I don't recomend it for the Campus Reading Program. I feel that female readers would relate to the book more so than males. Also, I feel like it is an intense topic and it is my understanding that the Campus Reading Program looks for lighter subjects.

The story and characters keep the reader engaged. I really enjoyed this book, however the length (400 pages plus)would probably not be very enticing to those who aren't avid readers.

I found the Help engaging, educational and poignant. Although intense, I think the subject matter is important for our students to read and discuss. The book was easy to read/difficult to put down. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book. I think it's time to have a book with strong female main characters. I also think it's engaging because the narrartor changes with each chapter and you find yourself wanting to continue to read to see what the other characters are thinking in the next chapters. The subject matter would be great to program around. The topics of race and socio-economic class as well as the concept of doing something that scares you because it's the right thing to do is very relatable and inspiring. I think that professors would be able to easily incorporate this book into several courses and would be interested in doing so.
