the book is a coming-of-age story about a young girl growing up on a horse ranch. it is full of interesting and compelling anecdotes about life, loss, relationships with family, the girl's exploration of love and how she interprets the world, differently or similarly to her family and community. It is a fun book and fairly well written, though i find the language sometimes a bit trite, or cliche.
i would not put the book on the top of the list for the campus reading program, especially since i think most male students will not be interested.

I found the book pretty compelling, but I am a woman and like relationship books. Maybe young men wouldn't like it but I still think we should keep it in play for a while.

I just couldn't get interested in a story consisting of little girls and My Little Ponies. Plus, I don't think anyone told this author adding a dead body doesn't automatically make the story "deep" (am I missing something as to why she threw this in?)
