I found this to be a very engaging book. Main character is 16-year old pregnant girl who is sent by her mother from Minneapolis to stay with grandma in Nebraska farm for last few months. While there, she uncovers some family secrets. Family has a variety of issues for the past 50+ years – a bit of a soap opera. While engaging, I’m afraid there isn’t enough to discuss here and there isn’t much diversity so some students may be disengaged. Possible topics include: what is family (these involve unwed mothers, adoptions, very close “hired hands”), treatment of “hired hands,” problems of small farms surviving today, family secrets and living without knowing some of them that could tear a family apart.

I enjoyed this book in and of itself, but had a hard time picturing discussing it with students. I think many would enjoy it, but I just couldn't think of many topics that would be engaging across a wide range of people. Also the story is almost completely focused around a cast of women which based on the story as well, might not be something that would be engaging for our male students. Just a thought.
