True story about a basketball team in Fort Yukon – a very small city in northern Alaska. The first few pages portray a city of drunks and drug users of all ages – primarily men. The coach is caring for a nephew with fetal alcohol syndrome which, as he learns more about, he discovers several kids have it. There is some discussion around how older natives differ from the younger generation. Also, some issues about nature. But, this is primarily a story about basketball as you can also tell from the names of the chapters and the back of the book says it is one of the top 10 sports books of 2006. While we might broaden our horizons about a remote part of Alaska, there are likely better books to get a broader sense (beyond just a b-ball focus) of life and culture and issues there. Also, many people may not enjoy a books identified as a sports book.
